DFL ENDORSEMENT GOES VIRTUAL

It’s tremendously important to realize that the DFL ENDORSEMENT FOR LOCAL ELECTIONS WILL BE ENTIRELY ONLINE THIS YEAR. That makes it much easier to show your interest by moving the mouse. No more sitting in a cramped schoolroom on a weeknight.
The not-so-good news is that incumbents have a great advantage over challengers because a) officeholders have recognition, easy endorsements from fellow elected peers, and advanced online infrastructure b) the outside big money is already flowing to Police Defund/Abolish incumbents and c) it feels like Minneapolis DFL insiders already lean toward police defund or the questionable charter change amendment...whatever those things even really mean. That’s their freedom, but let’s have a healthy debate about it.
Granted, this may be the year the DFL endorsement loses much of its traditional importance – I can't believe anyone will abide -- but if a candidate does win full endorsement with 60% of ward delegates (which are more or less decided in May at the precinct-level caucus) they get a lot more party support. If none does, all candidates get about equal structural support.
Whatever you feel about the issues, I feel it’s more honest and democratic if all candidates have a level field. Please research the candidates in your ward – and the mayor’s race and Park Board -- and reach out to express your willingness to spend about 5 minutes to be a delegate. Don’t worry, you may not even have to commit to the final virtual Ward Convention if your ward has more interested delegates than total vote allotment, which it probably will this time as opposed to 2017. You could be one-and-done this year. Simple!
Think of it this way: This year, ward endorsement is basically a wide-open online primary -- Dancing with the Delegates if you will. Would you skip an important election primary? Most of my friends would not, but city politics can be a little dull, or maddeningly obtuse.
THIS IS NOT THE YEAR TO SLEEP ON WHO IS REPRESENTING YOU (OR IGNORING YOU) AT OUR CITY HALL. It could all be decided in May instead of November.
That doesn’t seem right in a year so potentially disruptive and destructive as this one. So please, Take Five. . . minutes. Formal registration to be a DFL precinct delegate starts in April. This is just a heads up. Check into it. Thank you very much.
